Monsieur Hire Posted on: Wed, 22 Feb 2012 15:09:45 -0500

another reviewing of a film I liked when first on TV. Not as much now as
I thought the script could have benefited from a mid-film sequence with
a greater degree of suspense or some punch.
The title character is gnomish, fussy and too obsessed with ., but
comes over more as pathetic than creepy. Wish he had kept the mice tho.
Ultra low key plot developments center on a murder ( revealed right off
the top ) and the monsieur's unfortunate interest in a femme. If I had
been attracted to this girl I would have had more of an investment in
the story.
The way in which the camera captures Hire's last visual experience is
one of the most memorable moments I've seen in any film , period. This
elegant, twisted romance is worth watching.
