I think, for many, it goes far deeper than an assumption. For some, it's an
emotional need to credit themselves ("Im good because I care"), a matter of
social connections (shared values giving them a sense of belonging), or
simply adopting any stance that lines thier pocket (other guy taxes,
handouts). In my experience, it is a rare person who even examines his
beliefs.
