You're much kinder to the film than I am. Agreed on Betty Hutton--she
was just supremely irritating, as she was in most of her movies. She
had outsized talent and drive, but she was out of control and only
Preston Sturges knew how to contain her and direct her to be genuinely
entertaining--see THE MIRACLE OF MORGAN'S CREEK.
I thought the train wreck was badly staged and handled. And the way
the main characters react afterwards, with pseudo-romantic comedy
dialogue just drove me nuts ("You've got sawdust in your veins!" or
something like that.)
GREATEST SHOW just might be the worst movie to win the Best Picture
Oscar. Although it has strong competition from numerous winners in
recent years. |
