After reading comments in here for years, finally made a point of tivo-ing
this and watching it. I give it ** out of five stars.
What I liked about it:
Charlton Heston. Can see why this role put him on the maps. Definitely
showed he had the charisma to be a leading man.
The travelogue like display of the circus. I'm sure audiences that had
never had the circus come to their town enjoyed seeing the acts.
Cornell Wilde. Nice rogue role.
What i didn't like about it:
Betty Hutton. I just didn't like anything about her performance. Didn't
find her the least bit feminine or attractive in this role.
Dorothy Lamour. Very weak written role. She could have done much more if
asked to.
Jimmy Stewart. It wasn't being in clown face it was being an invisible
character. Even when given some lines didn't seem to be into them.
Many of the minor characters could have been in a B serial. Not quality
acting at all.
Summary: Glad I saw it so I could discuss it, but not something I'll ever
rewatch or recommend.
