My local library got me a copy of "Fall of Eagles" (UK - 1974) the BBC
miniseries about the events leading up to World War One. Many libraries
in the State system have this series. I had the DVDs 24 hours after
submitting the request.
There seems to be a major problem here (I say this glibly after watching
three of the 13 50 minute episodes) in that each episode is written
by a different person and also directed by another different person.
There appears to be no cohesive vision on how the individual parts come
together on the screen. Sets and costumes are brilliant (read
expensive), camera work is flawless - and yet I got the feeling I was
looking at something that just did not work. "Fall of Eagles" utilizes
just about every actor working in England in 1974 and - I have to say
this - there is no good character development up on the screen. I guess
I was hoping this series would be as good as say, "House of Cards" or
"The Last Place on Earth". But, no seegar.
Next up in the pile is "And Quiet Flows the Don".
