The White House tapes are very revealing, and that very consideration,
my friend, was front and center in the evil mind of dastardly Dick when
it came time to pick Agnew's successor. Jerry Ford was a natural; he was
a loyal water-carrier (like Thompson, counsel to Baker on the Senate
committee) and he was well-liked with 25 years in the House and, as
Nixon put it to his co-conspirators, "Can you see Jerry Ford sitting
here?" A perfect hedge, but even that hoop wasn't high enough.
