All my friends and relatives, the ones I've discussed this with
anyway, love Altman's Popeye. In my circle it's a movie held in the
kind of high regard others reserve for Monty Python's Search for the
Holy Grail -- everybody seems to have favorite quotes, scenes,
characters, jokes. (He's/she's large. You can't inherick a pipe! I
will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today. Must be some kinda
lubrikink. And so on.) But on the net I find people who in addition
to disliking Popeye, seem astonished to learn ANYONE might even have
tolerated the movie, much less fallen in love with it. Some people
seem to think it's as appropriate to disparage Popeye as it is to
ridicule Howard the Duck. I realize there's no point in trying to
persuade you it's a great movie. I just want you to know that there
are a lot of people who "get" Popeye and treasure it as a favorite. I
certainly do.
