There are two reasons Korda pulled the plug (according to the documentary
"The Epic that Never Was"). First, Laughton was not able to "find" the

rather than have Von Sternberg shoot a scene. The second was that Merle
Oberon
herself was in a serious automobile accident at this time and production
on the
picture was halted. She is quoted as saying that Lloyds of London paid out a
fortune when the filming ceased.
